During the 1930's through the early 1960's, National Studios, a photographic firm situated in the heart of Times Square Area of New York City, photographed prize fighters, wrestlers and entertainment celebrities in their studios. There was a constant parade of the famous to the National Studios such as, Marciano, Sugar Ray, Dempsey, Joe Louis, Jake LaMotta, Jersey Joe, Braddock, Gavalin, Pep, Saddler, Zivic, and Jack Sharkey. to name a few. They rubbed shoulders with Jack Benny, Betty Grable, Fred Allen, Frank Sinatra, Benny Goodman, Perry Como, Jackie Gleason, Abbott & Costello, Roy Rodgers, James Cagney, Bob Hope and many more. National Studios was also the photographer of the New York Rangers.
National Studios sold sport photos through publications such as the National Police Gazette until the middle 1940’s when National Sports Photos Inc. was formed, the first firm to be in the mail order sport photo business. In the early 1960’s, National Studios, then the world’s leading maker of television graphics decided to move to larger quarters, specialize in television and give up its studio and phase out of the sport photo business. The negatives lay for 30 years, unused. Now with the nationwide interest in sports memorabilia, a demand has arisen for genuine sport photos of earlier years. These photos have been out of circulation for over 30 years and are now being offered to collectors. These photos have been supplemented with those who have been playing since then.
